Guilin Medical University Located in the historical and tourist city of Guilin which is world well-known for its unique beauty of hills and rivers, Guilin Medical University (GLMU) is an undergraduate university directly under Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. GLMU is an undergraduate university directly under the administration of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Founded in 1935 from the former Guilin Senior Nurse Midwifery School, GLMU was upgraded and renamed as Guilin Medical School in 1958. Approved by the former State Education Committee in 1987, the school was upgraded to Guilin Medical College for undergraduates. In 1993, Guilin Medical College was approved by the state of Ministry of Education and the State of Management Bureau of Chinese Traditional Medicine to have the qualifications to offer undergraduate programs to international students both in medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, and what’s more, it has a certain number of government scholarships to offer to candidates of international students every year. GLMU passed the undergraduate teaching work evaluation at the first attempt in 1996. It gained the qualification to conduct postgraduate programs to students and in December of the same year it was evaluated and accredited a “distinguished University” by the Ministry of Education of China in the undergraduate teaching work evaluation. Currently, Guilin Medical University is a medical and pharmaceutical institution of higher learning with good fame and influence in and out of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, giving priority to clinical medicine and also integrating pharmacy, biotechnology, medical assay as well as nursing into a multi-specialty harmoniously-developed university with stronger comprehensive power.
Guilin Medical University (GLMU), formerly known as Guilin Senior Nurse Midwifery School, was founded in 1935. It was transformed and renamed as Guilin Medical School in 1958. Approved by the former State Board of Education in 1987, the school was upgraded to a college for medical undergraduates. In 1993, the college was granted to train foreign students and in 2006, it was authorized to conduct graduate programs. GLMU was recognized as an “Excellent University” by the Ministry of Education of China in 2012.
For the past five years, the university has undertaken 945 research projects, 117 of which are national projects, 161 provincial and ministerial projects, 44 science and technology achievement awards at all levels. It won 49 national patents, including 12 invention patents, 4,194 research papers, including 168 SCI and EI Indexed Papers, 1,791 Chinese core journals and completed 134 provincial teaching reform project in nearly five years. GLMU was conferred the national teaching award and 33 provincial teaching achievement awards. The university was featured in the "Chinese Medicine" Chinese Academic journal, "China Journal", "Articles Digital Periodicals" online journal, the journal of the American Chemical Abstracts and Guangxi outstanding scientific journal.
GLMU takes an active part in the international exchanges and cooperation, and it is one of the earlier institutions of higher learning being accredited by the former State Education Committee and the State Administration Bureau of Traditional Chinese Medicine to enroll international students and offer education of clinical medicine and traditional Chinese medicine to them. Currently, we have foreign students from USA, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam and so on. After more than seventy years of construction and development, the scale of the university has consistently been enhanced and elevated with each passing year. In turn, the university is getting stronger and at the same time, the teaching quality is being improved steadily. Furthermore, the university has been cultivating increasing numbers of practical medical talents. Over the recent three years, the proportion of undergraduate students taking up a medical-related occupations has been being retained over 93 %, making positive contributions to medical care and to the health service of Guangxi, the country and the world as well. Definitely, the fame and reputation of the university is being increased year after year. Therefore, the university is becoming more widely accepted by the society, and it gradually paves its own unique way to run a medical university at the accepted standards.
