Having been approved by the Ministry of Education, CTGU was founded in June 29, 2000, comprising the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering/Yichang and the former Hubei Sanxia College. The history of CTGU can be dated back to 1946, while the bachelor education started from 1978, and the postgraduate and international student education began from 1996. CTGU has the qualification to confer the degrees of bachelor, master and doctor, and to recruit international students of CSC scholarship. Moreover, the Ministry of Water Resources and the People’s Government of Hubei Province signed agreements in 2009 to build CTGU in joint effort. Beside, CTGU was awarded with “Advanced unit of opening up” by Hubei Provincial government in 2010; and was awarded with “Demonstration base of international student education”in 2014. By now, China Three Gorges University has become an comprehensive university with characteristic features of prominent discipline advantage, hydropower resources and great social reputation. CTGU consists of 29 colleges, 70 undergraduate programs covering nine fields including science, engineering, medicine, arts, economics, management, law, education and fine arts. There are 5 national-level characteristic disciplines for undergraduates; 10 provincial-level branded disciplines for undergraduates; 7 disciplines selected as the instalment of “A plan for Educating and Training Outstanding Engineers” by the Ministry of Education, 8 disciplines taught in English. There are 2 primary-discipline doctoral programs, 20 primary-discipline master’s degree programs and 130 secondary-discipline master’s degree programs. There are 12 professional master's degree programs in engineering, business administration (MBA), translation and interpretation (MTI), etc.. There are 11 provincial key primary-discipline programs.
Three Gorges University is approved by the Ministry of Education, former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric (Yichang) and Hubei Three Gorges College in 2000 Nian 6 Yue 29 of merger to form. The former Wuhan Water Conservancy and Electric Power University (Yichang) was founded in 1978 , Gezhouba Hydropower Engineering College, has attached to the Ministry of Water Resources and Power, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Power Industry, the State Power Corporation, 1996 and the original Wuhan University of Water Conservancy merged to form The new Wuhan Water Conservancy and Electric Power University has become an important part of the "211 Project " construction university . The original Hubei Three Gorges Institute is from the original Yichang Teachers College, Yichang Medical College, Yichang Vocational University in 1996 merged.
School history can be traced back to 1923 , 1978 , began to hold undergraduate education , is the first batch of national bachelor degree grant unit, in 1996 began to hold postgraduate education, in 1998 began to train doctoral students. School for 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and more than 20 countries (regions) enrollment in the country into a full enrollment.
The school has a doctoral degree grant, with the recommendation of outstanding undergraduate students to study for free postgraduate qualifications, serving staff to apply for a master's degree qualifications, minority pre-qualification, students and the Chinese government scholarship students ( CSC ) qualifications, exemption from Hong Kong students eligible.
The school is the Ministry of Water Resources and Hubei Provincial People's Government to build a university, is the Ministry of education " excellent engineer education and training program " colleges and universities. At present, the Three Gorges University has become a water conservancy and power characteristics and advantages are more obvious, comprehensive school strength, enjoy a certain social reputation of the comprehensive university.
In 2004, the college enrolled the first batch of international students of clinical medicine. In 2011, the college was granted the qualification to recruit international students majored in MBBS (English medium) by Ministry of Education of China. In 2013, CTGU became the demonstration base of international student’s education by Ministry of Education of China. Through more than ten year’s exploration and efforts, now the college owns a set of complete management system, an excellent teaching team and characteristic talents training mode which is showcase of CTGU education internationalization.
The college is equipped with excellent medical facilities for teaching, and has four teaching hospitals with titles of the first class in the third level (third level means top level) arranges exclusive multimedia classrooms for international students. The library collects the reference books related to the medical teaching in English versions over 13800 and renews every year to meet the requirements of teachers and students. At the same time, the complete management system and clear division of responsibilities ensure the education quality of oversea students. The courses of MBBS are delivered in English by excellent teachers who have the international education background and much experience in teaching international students. Meanwhile, some external experts and professors are invited to teach some theoretical courses. The college also pays great attention to student’s practical ability training and arranges many experiment courses by taking advantages of the rich experiment and practice platform resources. Teaching hospitals have standardized management and are strict with student’s pre-internship and internship.
Up to now, the CTGU graduates passing rate of medical licensing examination held in their motherlands or the third country is over 85%.
